Why is my oven not heating properly?
Short answer
Most ovens that get called dead are still making heat, just not the amount printed on the dial. Sensors drift as they age, the control takes that reading on trust, and the household experience is uneven browning and a roast that has quietly started needing an extra half hour. Calibration, in other words, rather than a range at the end of its life. No heat whatsoever is usually the cheaper diagnosis: a gas oven whose glow bar lights up beautifully while drawing too little current to open the safety valve, or an electric one with a dead bake element or relay behind it. And when an oven quits the instant a self-clean finishes, look at the door latch before anything else.
If it is gas and you can see the igniter, watch it before you call. Switch the oven on, look underneath, and time it. A healthy glow bar has the valve open inside about a minute. One that sits there glowing orange for four or five minutes and never lights gas is failing in the classic way, and the reason it fools people is that it looks perfect the entire time. It is drawing too little current to trip the valve, and it will never tell you so. That single observation usually settles the diagnosis before the range gets pulled out of its opening.
In the older Point Loma houses there is a second thing worth thinking about, which is the room rather than the range. Kitchens around Loma Portal and the Wooded Area were laid out when a range was thirty inches wide and ventilation meant opening a window. A professional range has since gone into that space and the venting was solved with whatever the remodel would allow. Heat that cannot leave the room ends up sitting around the control housing and the sensor, and neither part enjoys that year after year. If your oven has been drifting rather than failing, and the kitchen gets uncomfortable when it is on, those two facts are related.
