Common fault
Why is my Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling?
Short answer
Tell us what the freezer is doing and you have halved the diagnosis before we arrive. Still rock hard while the fresh-food side has climbed? Then the compressor is not your problem. A built-in of this class refrigerates its two halves with independent sealed systems, and a freezer holding 0°F is proof that one of them is in fine health. The trouble is on the fresh-food circuit: its fan, a defrost fault that has iced its coil solid, or a damper stuck shut. Warm right through, with the machine clearly running? Start at the condenser, because nothing else on this peninsula explains that pattern half as often.
The order we work through and the reason for it. Condenser and grille first, since a fin pack you cannot see light through has stopped doing its job whatever it looks like from the front, and on Point Loma it is the single likeliest answer on either side of the ridge. Second, the fresh-food fan: hold the door switch in with the door open and you can usually hear whether it is turning. Third, defrost, which gives itself away as a solid slab of ice over the freezer coil. Then the damper, then the seals, then the board. The list runs from cheap and common toward expensive and rare, which also happens to be the order in which these faults genuinely occur.
Two things worth checking before we get there. Look at whether a custom cabinet panel or a closed-off toe kick is lapping the lower grille, which is common around Loma Portal and the Wooded Area where a modern built-in went into a kitchen framed long before it existed. And hold a hand near that grille while the unit runs. Air should be moving and it should feel warm. Still, cold air there while the cabinet is warm usually means the unit is not actually running at all, which is a different and normally much simpler conversation about power and controls.
If that matches what your appliance is doing, say so when you call — it tells us which parts to bring, and most of these are finished in one visit.
