One peninsula, two climates, and a refrigerator that can tell the difference

A ridge runs the length of this peninsula and it splits the service work in two. West of it, above Sunset Cliffs and down through Ocean Beach, the wind comes off open water and never really lets up. It carries surf aerosol and fine grit, it drives both straight into the lower grille of anything with a front intake, and it loads a condenser from the outside in. East of it, in La Playa and the bay-facing streets, that same ridge takes the wind out of the afternoon. This sounds like an advantage and is only half of one: nothing gets blown through a fin pack that nothing blows across, so cooking film, dust and pet hair settle and stay, bound into a mat that a vacuum will not lift. Two mechanisms, one result, and a technician who treats them the same way will do the wrong half of the job on both sides of the hill.

The houses count for as much as the air does. A lot of what we open in Loma Portal and the Wooded Area went up when a kitchen was a small room with a door on it, and a forty-eight inch built-in has since been fitted into an opening that got remodeled around it. The compromise is almost always the return air path: a custom panel laps the grille, a toe kick was closed off, an upper cabinet was extended down to meet the top of the unit. Ocean Beach runs to smaller kitchens and more undercounter equipment. The Midway District condos run newer, with integrated columns that carry a great deal more electronics than the units they replaced. We ask what the appliance is doing before setting off, since the parts that ride in the van should match your fault rather than a general expectation of one.

On the visit the order is fixed. The lower grille comes off and the condenser gets looked at before a meter comes out of the bag; temperatures are taken off the metal rather than off the front panel; and you are told, and where the cabinet allows it shown, what has failed. One price covering parts and labor is agreed before any work begins. We fit OEM-grade parts, run the system through a complete cycle afterward to confirm it holds, and the repair carries a warranty on parts and workmanship.
