Wine Cooler Calibration and Repair in Point Loma

Two degrees is a real fault in a wine cabinet. In these houses the racks are worth a good deal more than the cabinet holding them. Which way a Point Loma column drifts often comes down to which way the room faces. West of the ridge, above Sunset Cliffs and through Ocean Beach, the last two hours of daylight arrive low and straight through the glass, and a cabinet set into that wall carries a heat load nobody accounted for at install. East of the ridge, in La Playa, the sun is on the room early and the slope shades it by mid-afternoon. A column that was stable in one of those orientations will not necessarily stay stable when a remodel moves it into the other.

Each zone is tested on its own terms, with a thermometer on the rack among the bottles rather than the number on the door taken at face value. When one zone is rock steady and the one beside it is climbing, that is good news: the good zone proves the compressor and the sealed system, and the fault belongs to the bad zone's own circuit.

• A display holding 55°F while a thermometer on the rack reads several degrees higher
• Fog or beads of water inside the glass: pane heater circuit, or a seal past its life
• Humidity low enough to shrink corks, or high enough to lift labels off the bottles
• Cabinets set into a west-facing wall and swinging wide either side of setpoint
• Condenser cleaning where a column has been built into bar cabinetry with almost no intake

The number worth having is the one taken among the bottles, and on this peninsula the hour you take it counts as well. Wine columns fail politely: the panel holds its setpoint all week while the cabinet swings several degrees either side of it, and the number on the door is the middle of that swing rather than the temperature your collection is living at. On a west-facing room above the cliffs we will come back late in the day if that is what it takes, because that is the hour a marginal cabinet gives itself away. If the room is the cause rather than the machine we will say so.
