Calling about a built-in on the peninsula

Nearly everything that settles a diagnosis is already in your head before you dial. Which appliance, which compartment has gone wrong, what it is doing, roughly when you first noticed, and whatever the display is showing, read out character by character. The model number after that, if you can get to it: on built-in refrigeration the plate sits inside the door frame, or behind the machine compartment grille — above the doors on a full-height built-in, at the base on undercounter units — and that grille normally lifts away by hand. Those characters pin down which generation of board, fan and evaporator is standing in your kitchen, and this peninsula carries an unusually wide spread of them, from mechanical built-ins older than the remodels around them to integrated columns fitted last year.

Tell us the neighborhood as well as the street. That sounds like small talk and it is not. An address above Sunset Cliffs or off Newport Avenue gets a different set of parts loaded than one on the La Playa side of the ridge, because the wind that scours a fin pack on the ocean side also puts salt into fan hardware and connectors, while the sheltered streets below the ridge produce a coil matted with something that has to be combed out by hand. Mention the approach while you are at it. Ocean Beach houses are often worked from the alley rather than the front, La Playa streets step down toward the water with cars parked along both sides, and a flight of exterior steps between the curb and the kitchen is worth knowing about before a condenser or a door panel comes off the van.
