Common fault

What is the loud humming or rattling from my refrigerator?

Short answer

A noise that has just started on a built-in is almost always coming from the machinery behind the lower grille and not from the food compartments. Rattling points at the condenser fan: something has reached the blade, or the bearing has worn. A hum you feel through the floor as much as hear points at the compressor mounts, which go hard with age and hand their vibration to whatever cabinetry they sit against. Neither one ruins your day. Both deserve attention, because a seized fan leaves the machine unable to get rid of its heat, and at that stage you are no longer buying a fan.

On the ocean-facing streets a noisy condenser fan is often the first honest warning that salt has been at work. The bearing takes on film that holds moisture, starts to run dry, and gets loud months before it stops turning. The useful thing about that noise is the notice it gives you: the fan still spins, the unit still cools, and it is a modest part fitted from the front with the grille off. Once the fan stops, heat has nowhere to go, the compressor works continuously against rising head pressure, and a straightforward job becomes a warm refrigerator and a much longer conversation.

In the small kitchens common through Loma Portal and the Wooded Area, the room amplifies everything. A built-in set hard against a run of older casework, with wood floors, plaster walls and not much soft furnishing anywhere, will pass compressor hum through the cabinetry and into the next room. That does not mean the machine is louder than it should be. It means nothing in the room is absorbing it. We can usually separate the two quickly by laying a hand on the cabinet stile while the compressor is running, and if the answer is isolation rather than a part, that is what we will tell you.

If that matches what your appliance is doing, say so when you call — it tells us which parts to bring, and most of these are finished in one visit.
